BIBLE STUDY: Biblical Steps To Preserving Unity In God's Church

"Behold, how Good and how Pleasant it is for brethren to dwell Together in Unity!!!" (Psalm 133:1). God inspired David to end this Psalm with...

"for there the LORD commanded the blessing, even life for evermore!!!" (Psalm 133:3).

Unity in God's Church is necessary for Him to Bless His Convocation of Saints each week, and on each Holy Day! Unity in God's Church is where we learn to have Unity with the Father and with the Son, and with the whole world for ALL of Eternity! Unity is of MAJOR IMPORTANCE to God!!! The Unity of mankind with God The Father, IS The Gospel Plan FULFILLED!!! That is WHY we MUST have UNITY in God’s Church!!!

Bible Study Instructions: One Nation Under God Ministries ( publishes and distributes weekly Bible Studies, worldwide – free of charge, to anyone who requests them, in both printed and electronic formats. Our Studies are intended to be a simple and fun way to learn the Scriptures, and are very easy to follow! We adhere to Jesus Christ’s Biblical instructions to teach and feed the flock of God portions of meat in due season, on weekly Sabbaths, and on the seven annual Holy Days throughout each calendar year (Luke 12:42 / Isaiah 28:9-10 / Matthew 13:52). Using both the Old and New Testaments, our Bible Studies are designed to present a premise, make a statement, or ask a question – followed by one or more Scriptural references. Just look up and read from your Bible the Scriptures listed. Comments following questions elaborate on the Scriptures you just read. Pray always before beginning any study of God’s Word, asking God to open both your eyes and your mind to His Truth; then Prove everything you read, is in fact the Truth, by comparing it to The Word of God (1 Thessalonians 5:21 / 2 Timothy 3:15-17). Then use the Biblical System of Checks and Balances, and SEE if both Jesus Christ, and the First Century Church of God Apostles – also Did, Said, and Taught these SAME THINGS (Galatians 1:1-12, 5:25 / 1 Peter 2:21, 25 / 1 John 2:3-6)! That’s all there is to it! Our Bible Studies are based on the King James Version, unless otherwise stated. We will be praying for your eyes to “see” (Matthew 13:11-17); and we are always available to answer any of your questions! Be Blessed, in Jesus’ Name! - One Nation Under God Ministries (

Jesus, the Author of Salvation and the Absolute Head of the Church He Founded, gives us His Blue Print for handling riffs and offenses between the Members of His Body that destroy church unity:

"Moreover if thy brother shall trespass against thee, go and tell him his fault between thee and him ALONE: if he shall hear thee, thou hast gained thy brother. But if he will not hear [thee, then] take with thee one or two more, that in the mouth of two or three witnesses every word may be established. And if he shall neglect to hear them, tell it unto the church: but if he neglect to hear the church, let him be unto thee as an heathen man and a publican!" (Matthew 18:15-17).

It is clear, by Jesus Christ's own Words, that when a member of God's Church, has been offended by another member, real or perceived; that offended member should:

1) Humbly approach the other - personally and privately (one on one); and attempt to resolve their issue by Scriptural guidance - in Love! This is the recipe for marital disputes, friendships, brethren, or parent - sibling disputes.

The Apostle Paul further expounds on this in Ephesians 4:25-26.

"Wherefore putting away lying, speak every man truth with his neighbour: for we are members one of another! Be ye angry, and sin not: let not the sun go down upon your wrath. Neither give place to the devil!!!"

This means you have 24 hours at the most, from the moment you are offended - to approach a brother or sister in Christ with your issue against them, and to RESOLVE IT within those 24 hours!!! Prolonged Offense is Sin! You must forgive and move on!!! Not forgiving Quickly, makes you even more offensive to God than the one who offended you; as it Empowers Satan, Causes Division, and Weakens The Body of Christ!!!

See this concept again in Mark 11:25-26!

"And when ye stand praying, forgive, if ye have ought against any: that your Father also which is in heaven may forgive you your trespasses. But if ye do not forgive, neither will your Father which is in heaven forgive your trespasses!!!"

Do you see that nobody can stand and pray for more than a day! When we are offended, we might stomp, and strut, and pace back and forth - if the offense is big enough! But then we come before God's Throne and ask God for the proper mindset and emotions, that He may Guide us back to forgiveness, reconciliation, and unity among the brethren!!!

If we do not forgive any other (in the church or not), God does not, and Will Not forgive us of our sins!!! Being Unforgiven by God, for failing to forgive another; puts us OUTSIDE of Unity with God, with Jesus Christ, and with His Church!!!

Being outside of the Spiritual Protection of God, by not forgiving another; opens up your mind, and body to Satan - so he can come in and delude you even further! Do not give place to the devil!!! That's what lack of forgiveness does!!!

Forgive every offense DAILY, or Satan will wreak havoc on your your psyche, and make a mountain out of a mole hill! That mountain will keep you out of the Kingdom of God!!!

Being Unforgiven is a Terrible Thing!

There once was a wealthy father who promised to buy a nice sports car for his son upon high school graduation. They had together looked at the car, and discussed color options and such.

Months later on graduation day, the father invited his son up to his study to congratulate him on receiving his high school diploma. When the son entered the room, his father proudly gave him a hug, and handed his son a small box, wrapped in gift paper. The son unwrapped his gift, and discovered not a pair of driving gloves and a car key as he had suspected; but rather a Holy Bible instead! The son, in a fit of rage, threw the Bible on the floor, accusing the father of lying to him, and stormed out of the house. "You Liar! You promised me a sports car; not a ______ Bible!"

Thirty years passed, with not once the son ever answering any of his father's attempted telephone calls or letters. Then one day the son received a telephone call from his father's lawyer. The man told the son that his father had passed away, and that the son was mentioned in the old man's Will. The lawyer told the son he needed to come to the family estate for the reading of the Will in just a few days’ time.

When the son arrived early at the family estate, on the appointed day; he walked into his father's study and was impressed that it hadn't changed at all in over 30 years!

Glancing at the books on the shelf behind his father's desk, he noticed a box wedged prominently in the middle of the books. As the son opened the box, he recognized the Bible his father had given him 30 years previously. The son opened the Bible and an envelope and card fell from between the pages of the Bible to the floor. The son open up the card, signed by his father, congratulating him for finishing High School. That's when he noticed a check inside the card! The check was made payable to the car dealer, where he had gone with his Dad; and it was written for the exact amount of the price of the sports car he had wanted. The date on the check was the day of his High School graduation, 30 years ago!!!

Answering a matter without first hearing it, and then storming out in a fit of rage was a bad decision (Proverbs 18:13)! But refusing to reconcile and to forgive his father, cost him much more than a shiny new sports car! There comes a time when it's too late to say you are sorry, and there comes a time when it's too late to forgive! There is a lesson here for those in God's Church (Matthew 12:36)!!!

That is why Jesus teaches us to forgive and to forgive completely within 24 hours!!!

2) Jesus tells us that if an offending brother (or sister) will not seek to reconcile, or perhaps refuses to cease the unscriptural conduct causing the offense; the offended brother should seek the assistance of one or two more brethren (Spiritually Mature and Fruit on their Trees Saints) to go with them, in order to validate the offense. This is NOT to overwhelm and overpower, or to sternly rebuke or condemn the other party; but instead to encourage a loving dialog between the original two, so that the restoration of unity and fellowship may be accomplished in a manner pleasing to Christ!

3) However, if the offended party will not consider reconciliation; then the offended party will approach the Church Leadership, and ultimately the Pastor, to have the matter resolved permanently and finally - by Scripture and by The Authority of God Himself!

4) If the offender is determined by the Pastor, to have erred from Scripture in NOT attempting to reconcile with another within the fold; then the Pastor will put that member out of The Body of Christ, and all the other members of that Body will then cease from fellowshipping with the disfellowshipped member - that repentance may result, and hopefully that a fallen away or put away brother or sister may eventually be returned to God's Church before their natural death!

Over the years, I have seen this dynamic occur more times than I care to reflect on! I have seen brethren hell-bent on revenge, slander, anger, resentment, gossip, character assassination, and division within the Body of Christ! This is NOT the purpose for Saints in Christ's Church, and Christ will REMOVE those who foster these thoughts and actions (Numbers 14:36-39)!!!

Slanderers had conspired to tell Israel that the Canaanites were cannibals, they were giants (true), they dwelt in walled cities, and that Israel could not subdue them (Numbers 13:28-33)! God punished the entire nation for heeding the slander of the men who exaggerated the powers of the wicked; but God rewarded the two men who would not participate slander (Romans 3:8)!!!

Most have probably heard the expression:

"To err is human, to forgive is divine!"

I like to immediately follow that quote with:

"But to forget that you have forgiven, is the making of a True Saint!"

God tells us He Forgives and He Forgets our sins against Him - when we repent of them (Psalm 103:12 / Hebrews 8:12 / Isaiah 43:25 / Jeremiah 31:34)!!!

Would you want a brother or sister to never forgive you of a trespass or offense; or if they say they have forgiven you, to never forget that offense, and to constantly remind you of it (Matthew 7:12)? That’s NOT forgiveness!!!

God Condemns Hasty Conclusions And Unjust Judgements!!!

God will not hold us blameless if we do not develop in us the ability to Judge Righteously (Romans 2:1-13)! It is our divine destiny to do so!!!

Can a Christian Righteously Judge Another From The Bible?

"Dare any of you, having a matter against another, go to law before the unjust, and not before The Saints? Do ye not know that The Saints shall judge the world? And if the world shall be judged by you, are ye unworthy to judge the smallest matters? Know ye not that we shall judge angels? How much more things that pertain to this life?" (1 Corinthians 6:1-3).

God requires His Sabbath and Holy Day Keeping Church to Judge, to Correct, to Rebuke, and to Chastise those who, in the Name of Christ; Pervert the very Gospel Jesus brought to men (2 Timothy 3:13-17 / Galatians 1:1-12)

Saints should not speak disparaging remarks about their spouse to others, to their children, or to other family members. The Brethren should seek to EDIFY one another in Thought, Word, and Deed!!! Prayer and Reliance on God should be the order of the day in God’s Church!!!

Jesus Christ Commands us again:

"Ye have heard that it hath been said, Thou shalt love thy neighbour, and hate thine enemy. But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you; That ye may be the children of your Father which is in heaven: for He maketh his sun to rise on the evil and on the good, and sendeth rain on the just and on the unjust. For if ye love them which love you, what reward have ye? Do not even the publicans do the same? And if ye salute your brethren only, what do ye more than others? Do not even the publicans do so? Be ye therefore Perfect, even as your Father which is in heaven is Perfect!!!" (Matthew 5:43-48).

I always say, "We Become what we repeatedly Think About; and we ARE what we repeatedly Do!!!"

God is a God of Order! He set down His Order in Everything He Created, and He set down His Order in The Church! If we are to come into The Church of God, and remain and grow in His Church, we MUST follow that Divine Order!!!

1. Paul instructions to Timothy on the conduct God expects from the members of His Church Body:

The Bible says in 2 Timothy 2:22-26

"Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness (Psalm 119:172), faith, charity, peace, with them that Call on the Lord out of a pure heart!" These are the people coming to God's Church for the Right Reasons, with the Correct Mindset! They are focused on Unity and Growth, and NOT Destruction and Division!!!

Paul then continues: "But foolish and unlearned questions avoid!"

A great example of a foolish and unlearned (or ignorant) question is: "Have you stopped beating your wife yet?" This question is not answerable without responding to accusation and slander. It is certainly NOT how a brother in Christ should be addressed by another in God's Church. Why is that? Paul explains about foolish and ignorant questions:

"knowing that they do gender strifes!!! And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient. In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure, will give them repentance to the acknowledging of The Truth; And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will!" (2 Timothy 2:26).

Notice that the wrong mindset, or not having a pure heart, will make you accessible to Satan, and you will no longer protected by God's Sanctification, so that the devil can take you and your thoughts captive at will!!!

Pastors should avoid causing arguments, and censure those who do!!!  As a leader in God's church, the Pastor needs to set the example for the whole church to follow on this issue!!!

When a minor argument comes along, the members should be taught to refuse to get in the middle of it!!! You don’t need to have an opinion on everything; and on many things it is NOT your place to share your view within God's Church; especially on divisive subjects, and in other members personal matters!!!

Don’t be a busybody!!!

Refer members who voice dissatisfaction and division to the Pastor for clarification, resolution, and for church unity and harmony! Don't become a busy body or gossiper!!!

"For we hear that there are some which walk among you disorderly, working not at all, but are busybodies. Now them that are such we command and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that with quietness they work, and eat their own bread. But ye, brethren, be not weary in well doing. And if any man obey not our word by this epistle, note that man, and have no company with him, that he may be ashamed!!! Yet count him not as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother. (2 Thessalonians 3:11-15).

Some discussions don’t deserve your participation!!! Focus your conversations at church, and with the brethren, on Godly topics that really matter!

"Rejoice in the Lord always: and again I say, Rejoice. Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand. Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God. And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus. Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are True, whatsoever things are Honest, whatsoever things are Just, whatsoever things are Pure, whatsoever things are Lovely, whatsoever things are of Good Report; if there be any Virtue, and if there be any Praise, Think on These Things!!! Those Things, which ye have both learned, and received, and heard, and seen in me, DO: and the God of Peace shall be with you!!!" (Philippians 4:4-9)!!!

2. Teach troublemakers to repent. Second Timothy 2:25-26 says, “Those who oppose [the pastor] he must gently instruct, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of The Truth, and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will.” Most pastors don’t like confrontations. But THEY CANNOT RUN FROM THEM!!! Pastors must gently instruct those creating dissention, and those who oppose the Biblical Teachings of the Church!!!

3. Warn those causing trouble that their negative words hurt others!!! 2 Timothy 2:14, “Keep reminding them of these things. Warn them before God against quarreling about words. It is of no value and only ruins those who listen!!!” People in God’s Church need to know that their words have consequences!!!

4. Make a plea for Harmony and Unity in the Church! Paul did this in Philippians 4:2. He said, “I plead with Euodia and I plead with Syntyche to agree with each other in the Lord!!!” There were two very strong willed women in the church named Euodias and Syntyche who were causing so much friction in the church that Paul’s plea for them to stay united is in the Bible. Fighting in a church doesn’t just affect the combatants; it influences the whole church as people start taking sides. Just like Paul did, at times, the Pastor will need to make a plea for UNITY directly to those causing the problems!!!

5. Rebuke with Authority, if necessary!!! Paul says in Titus 2:15-3:1-6, “These, then, are the things you should teach. Encourage and rebuke with all authority. Do not let anyone despise you. Remind the people to be subject to rulers and authorities, to be obedient, to be ready to do whatever is good!”

Pastors may need to confront the contentious persons as well!!! Identify these behaviors now; and let them not be named among you! Act like an Heir of the Kingdom of God, should act!!!

6. Remove rebellious souls from the church, if they ignore two warnings!!! Titus 3:10-11 says, “Warn a divisive person once, and then warn him a second time. After that, have nothing to do with him. You may be sure that such a man is warped and sinful; he is self-condemned.”

No pastor wants to do this, but as a last resort, they may need to remove the contentious person from the church!!! Pastors MUST protect the Unity of THE CHURCH at all costs!!! If that means getting rid of troublemakers, a True Pastor Must and Will do it!!!

The Bible teaches that as the church grows, Satan will do everything he can to cause division. Even well-meaning people, even believers, can be used as tools of Satan to hurt the Body of Christ. Pastors, and the Shepherds of God’s people must protect their congregations from Satan’s greatest weapon – disunity!!! It’s not always easy, but it’s what they have been Called by God to do!!!

Four things that cause division in the church:

    Insecurity and

It is all too common to find those who feel superior to those who do not properly understand doctrine. It is easy to become proud.

Paul points to Jesus as the example of one who humbled himself for the purpose of bringing us to salvation. The very Gospel that is to unite us was made possible by Jesus’ example of humility (Philippians 2:5–11).

Those who promote division often have a misunderstanding of what it means to be set apart. Jesus told us that His coming would result in disagreement rather than peace. Jesus also told us that his followers would have to endure persecution. But we should not be seeking the disagreement, it may find us, but it should be something that we try to avoid. If an offense is to come, let it be the offense of the gospel and not the offense of those who seek to speak in God’s name. We don’t need to take hard stands on issues such as the preferred Bible translation, or wearing of cosmetics or many of the really silly things that have divided believers over the years (Isaiah 28:9-10 / 1 Thessalonians 5:21 / John 15:15 / Matthew 13:11-17).

Jesus told us that the defining mark of the Christian is to Love God (1 John 2:3-6)!!! If anything is to set us apart from others it should be the radical way we love those around us, by teaching them to Copy Christ (Matthew 28:18-20)!!!

I have seen in some a need to be reassured of being part of the “in” group. The insecurity manifests itself by setting up doctrinal litmus tests to see who is in and who is out. This could be over eschatology (the study of last things – interpretation of prophecy) or some other doctrine that is set up as the test for theit orthodoxy. When we look at who hung around Jesus, we have to marvel that churches work so hard at defining who is in and who is not. Jesus hung around with drunkards, hookers, thieves, terrorists and every other category of societal outcast. The one and only test for inclusion into his group was a love for Jesus that leads to OBEDIENCE TO GOD IN ALL THINGS (Revelation 22:14)!!!

Why then do we feel the need to quantify who is in and who is not? Jesus knows (Exodus 31:13-18)!!! And He showed us How to tell too! Use Christ’s formula, not your own!!!

I love Scripture. I spend time reading it and studying it so that I am on a path of increasing understanding of how God intends me to live and how I should understand the world around me. I believe that this study will lead me into correct belief and practice; it reinforces God’s Word!!!

But there is a danger for those who put high value on correct understanding of the Bible. Our desire for correct understanding can eclipse our love for the one who gave us Scripture. In other words, we can be so enamored with correct understanding, we can lose sight of the purpose for gaining that understanding. Our study is to draw us more deeply in love with the God who gave us the Bible; and to prepare us for His Coming Kingdom!!!

When our love for correct belief causes us to be unloving toward someone who believes differently; then perhaps we have made an idol out of our doctrine! Biblical Knowledge should never be used to make yourself superior to another!!!

Let us Hear The Conclusion of The Matter (Ecclesiastes 12:13)!!!

Jeremiah 17:9 tells us that our hearts can lead us astray. When division comes, the first place we should look for blame is in our own hearts. Am I causing division out of pride, misunderstanding, insecurity or idolatry? Am I working to be the cause of resolution to the division or am I promoting it?

Unfortunately, the world around us thinks of the church as judgmental and contentious. May we begin to allow God to change our hearts so that we can be known for our Love and Obedience toward God, and our Christ-like emulation (Romans 16:17-20)!!!

Finally, Acts chapter 2 gives us some great insight to the Unity of God's Church! Notice:

"And when the day of Pentecost was fully come, they were all with one accord in one place. 2 And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting. 3 And there appeared unto them cloven tongues like as of fire, and it sat upon each of them. 4 And they were all filled with the Holy Ghost, and began to speak with other tongues, as the Spirit gave them utterance!" (Acts 2:1-4).

Take Note that the thing that guarantees we have Eternal Life, at the Return of Christ - The Holy Spirit; was only given to God's Church because:

1) They were Obedient (they still were keeping Holy Days after the Resurrection and Ascension of Christ)!!!

2) They had Unity (they were all of one accord, or were in agreement with each other and in Doctrine)!!! Remember, Thomas was NOT in agreement with the other Apostles after the Crucifixion of Christ! In addition to doubting, he did NOT want the Unity the other 10 Apostles maintained (John 20:19-30. Again we see lack of unity equals lack of Faith; and that Eternal Life is dependent upon our UNITY)!!!

3) They were in One Place (they were assembling at the location chosen by God's Authority and Government; and NOT a place of their own choosing)!!!

Peter made it CLEAR that Jesus Christ was ONLY Saving Souls through the UNITY of the Church, and through the Unified Doctrine that Jesus Christ taught!

Let us close today with just a few more Scriptures (Acts 2:36-47 / Titus 3:10-11 / 1 Corinthians 1:10-17 / 2 Timothy 4:3 / Ephesians 4:1-6),

Convocation Time, or Sabbath Time, is the Gathering by God of His People; each week and each Holy Day Season in Unity and Peace. May we all aspire to attain such an Awesome, Divinely Mandated ideal!!! Peace!!!

We are honored that you joined us today, in the Study of God’s Word! We hope that you will join us again next week, and that you will continue to share what you have learned here, with others – at home, at work, and in your neighborhood (Matthew 28:18-20 / Mark 16:15-20)! May our Great God, Bless you and keep you, until then – in Jesus’ Name!!!

God is calling YOU to be a follower of Jesus Christ, and the first century church, can you hear His Voice (1 John 2:6 / Matthew 11:29)? The Sabbath and Holy Days show us God’s Plan. When we keep these Holy Days we become the very Voice of God to this fallen world; we are in effect saying, by our actions on each Feast Day, “Come LORD Jesus, Come” (Revelation 22:12, 17, 20-21)!!! We are actually confessing Christ before men (Matthew 10:32-33)!

The faithful and obedient in Christ will always keep God’s True Holy Days and Sabbath; and will reject the pagan lies and substitutions of God’s TRUTH (Revelation 22:11-15)! God’s Holy Days are meant for Christians to ENJOY! They truly are FEAST DAYS, meant to be enjoyed by God’s elect everywhere, throughout time, FOREVER!!!

If you have never faithfully kept God’s seventh day Sabbath holy or God’s Holy Days, the way Jesus Christ did – in the flesh, and in the fellowship of other followers of the Son of Man; we invite you to obediently enter into God’s rest today, and to keep the Feasts of the LORD (Hebrews 4:1-11 / Leviticus 23:1-44)! ”But ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep, as I said unto you. My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand. I and my Father are one” (John 10:26-30).

Christians must learn to read the Bible, interpret the scriptures according to Biblical principles (Isaiah 28:9-10, / Matthew 13:52), and begin to apply the precepts they learn in their walk with God. Individual study is essential; coupled with fellowship times of group study, worship, and discussions of personal insights and observations.

We strive, each Saturday, to foster an open and welcoming atmosphere where Spirit led confirmation, clarification, questions, and correction can be made in the fellowship of other students of God’s Word.

One Nation Under God U.S.A. ( is working to unify the body of Christ in the worship of God the Father, in the way Jesus showed us to - in Spirit and in Truth! We strive to promote rediscovery of American History, and renew in current generations the Vision and the Covenant of our Founding Fathers.
