BIBLE STUDY: Will The Real Jesus Christ Please Stand Up? (Part 1)

“To Tell The Truth”, was an American T.V. game show that ran from 1956-2002. Three challengers are introduced, all claiming to be the central character. Each episode began with the announcer asking all of the challengers, who were standing side by side, “What is your name, please?” The challengers then answer identically, “My name is… (each giving the central character’s name).”

The thing that made the show so popular, for so many years, was that the imposters were permitted to lie and pretend to be the central character; but the actual central character was sworn to give only truthful answers to the four celebrity panelists – who would each ask the challengers a series of questions, in an attempt to identify the imposters - and discover who was telling the TRUTH (and who really was the genuine central character)! I thought the original show’s logo (used from 1956-1968) was very clever; it was a right hand - held up as though taking an oath, but with two crossed fingers to hide the lie.

Bible Study Instructions: One Nation Under God Ministries (www.onug.us) publishes and distributes weekly Bible Studies, worldwide – free of charge, to anyone who requests them, in both printed and electronic formats. Our Studies are intended to be a simple and fun way to learn the Scriptures, and are very easy to follow! We adhere to Jesus Christ’s Biblical instructions to teach and feed the flock of God portions of meat in due season, on weekly Sabbaths, and on the seven annual Holy Days throughout each calendar year (Luke 12:42 / Isaiah 28:9-10 / Matthew 13:52). Using both the Old and New Testaments, our Bible Studies are designed to present a premise, make a statement, or ask a question – followed by one or more Scriptural references. Just look up and read from your Bible the Scriptures listed. Comments following questions elaborate on the Scriptures you just read. Pray always before beginning any study of God’s Word, asking God to open both your eyes and your mind to His Truth; then Prove everything you read, is in fact the Truth, by comparing it to The Word of God (1 Thessalonians 5:21 / 2 Timothy 3:15-17). Then use the Biblical System of Checks and Balances, and SEE if both Jesus Christ, and the First Century Church of God Apostles – also Did, Said, and Taught these SAME THINGS (Galatians 1:1-12, 5:25 / 1 Peter 2:21, 25 / 1 John 2:3-6)! That’s all there is to it! Our Bible Studies are based on the King James Version, unless otherwise stated. We will be praying for your eyes to “see” (Matthew 13:11-17); and we are always available to answer any of your questions! Be Blessed, in Jesus’ Name! - One Nation Under God Ministries (www.onug.us).

Suppose this T.V. show was still being aired today, and you and I were invited to be on as panelists. Let’s say Jesus Christ was picked to be the central character among two other challengers (imposters). Would we be able to ask the right questions, and would we be able to identify the lying imposters from the Real Messiah? Could we discern between the answers given to our inquiries? Would we be able to pick out the Real Jesus Christ?

This is not just an amusing question, about T.V. trivia. The world today is chock full of different kinds of Jesus Christs! They come in every shape, size, hair length, physique, skin color, and each comes with their own belief system. Many of the major religions all recognize a Jesus; but each one is different, and each Jesus preaches a different message tailor made to appease his followers!

So Which One is the Real Jesus Christ, and Which Jesus Is Your Jesus (2 Corinthians 11:3-4)?

Any investigation of this magnitude must begin with Humility and Prayer! We MUST ask God for His Revealed WISDOM:

Father God, we come to You, as the source of our Life, and as the only source of our Truth! You alone, are the God of our Fathers; carefully leading one generation into the next generation. History is Your story, Great God; and we are so thankful that You have decided to write us into Your Plan for this world! You were the One who gave us a taste of life, by first weaving us together in our mother’s womb. You, Father, knew what kind of people we would one day become; and that at our appointed times, we would begin to search You out, and to search Your Word for Your revealed Truths. Father, we know that your great Gifts of Salvation and Eternal Life, come only by the Name of, and through Your Son, Jesus the Christ! But Satan has come with many imposters; with much deception, and with great lies he leads your children away from the Glorious Light of the Gospel, and from the TRUTH Your Son came to share with us! Help us today, Great God; through the power and might of Your Spirit which dwells within us - to discern Your Words of TRUTH! Show us our errors and our faults; strip away the deceptions of Satan, and expose his lies about Your Son. Reveal the Real Christ to us today, LORD! Let Your WORD speak to us, and let Your Light shine upon us in the Truth of who Your Son really was, and is; let us never again follow a false gospel, a false minister, a false prophet, or a false Christ - ever again! Give us humility to admit when we are wrong before You God. Teach us to reject the lies of this world and her false gods; teach us instead to worship You God, in Spirit and in Truth! Father, we Praise You, we Love You, and we Thank You! We ask for this Wisdom and for this Discernment, in Jesus’ Mighty Name. Amen!!! www.onug.us

In America today, you can have any kind of Jesus you want, they are all over the place! We have a Jewish Jesus, and a Christian Jesus; there is a Muslim Jesus, and even a “good teacher” Jesus in Scientology. There is a God Jesus, an angel Jesus, and a human Jesus; then there is a God Jesus who became a human Jesus – not to be confused with the angel Jesus who also became a human Jesus. One Jesus is called the Son of God; then there is another Jesus, who some believe had a brother named Lucifer, who became the devil. There is a Jesus who is part of a trinity; and then there is the “stand alone” Jesus, who is a distinct and separate Being underneath God The Father. It is really sad to admit, but we have more different flavors of Jesus, in our Christian America; than Baskin – Robbins has flavors of ice cream! Are you confused yet? Most Christians in America really are confused about their Jesus, whether they want to admit to it or not!

Who Is YOUR Jesus?

I have been talking to people about my Jesus for over forty years now. But my Jesus, the one I follow; is much different from the Jesus many other people follow! My Jesus is described in detail in the pages of the Bible - as the REAL, True Jesus Christ!

Let’s take a look at my Jesus, and see if He is any different from your Jesus. When we start comparing our Saviors, putting one Jesus next to the other Jesus - side by side; we begin to notice all of their differences, many of which we may have never seen before!

The Real Jesus:

What was Jesus, the Son of God, really like as a human being; and what is He like today? The thin and weak, longhaired Jesus who wears a halo cannot be found anywhere in your Bible (1 Peter 3:15)! So let’s use Scripture alone, to answer for us, some questions about Jesus the Christ; our Savior who came to us in human flesh!

Will The Real Jesus Christ Please Stand Up?

Let’s start comparing one Jesus to another Jesus, one Savior to another Savior; but let’s use only the Bible to help us tell them apart (Hebrews 4:12-16). Let us allow the Bible to prove who Jesus really was; and what He actually said, did, and what Jesus Commanded us to do, as the living WORD of God made flesh!!!

As we begin our study of God’s Word today, I ask you to believe ONLY the plain words written in your Bible; and to continue NO LONGER, in popular, but baseless assumptions about Jesus. The New Testament speaks of two different kinds of Jesus:

1) The Real One whose sayings are recorded in the Gospel accounts, and

2) A different Jesus – a false Jesus; who will lead many astray from the Truth of God (Matthew 24:11, 24 / Mark 13:22-23/ Matthew 11:27, 24:35-51 / Luke 10:22-24)!

Is your Jesus a long haired, hippy looking guy?

Despite all kinds of paintings, statues, and movies depicting Jesus as having long hair; the fact is we really don’t know what Jesus looked like. But we CAN know, from the Bible, what Jesus did not look like! The very first known depictions of Christ weren’t done until hundreds of years after His birth! That being the case, are we going to allow some artist to decide - for us, what Jesus looked like; or will we instead, allow inspired Scripture to paint for us, a mental picture in our minds, of our Savior’s human appearance (Exodus 20:4-6 / Leviticus 26:1)? Most of us have grown up on graven (“worshipped” idols or) images of what Jesus Christ was supposed to look like! They have affected our beliefs, our thoughts, and even our dreams of who and what Jesus is!

When you decide to search the scriptures for yourself, and see what God inspired to be recorded about His Son; you will be amazed at how different the Bible’s account of what Christ must have looked like was from what you thought or have been told about Him!!! In fact, the Bible has something shocking to say about men having long hair (1 Corinthians 11:13-15)! Jesus did NOT have hair like Fabio Lanzoni (the long haired male model of the 1980’s and 1990’s), who appeared on the cover of hundreds of women’s romance novels. We can also see from these Scriptures, that a bald head look on women (think G.I. Jane movie, starring Demi Moore; and Irish songwriter-singer, Sinead O’Connor), does NOT Glorify God, nor does it honor a woman who rejects her divinely given feminine covering (1 Corinthians 11:4-10)!

God did not intend for women to be bald or crop off all of their hair; and He certainly did not intend for men to look like the Beatles did in the 1970’s!

On at least two occasions, in the Bible, we can see that Jesus was able to slip away, into the crowds; when people were trying to kill Him (Luke 4:30 / John 8:59). Jesus was able to escape harm because He wasn’t, “That skinny Dude with the long hair and a beard”!!! www.onug.us

Jesus was an average looking man of His day, and was not especially handsome (Isaiah 53:2); He blended in with most of the other people around Him. Did Jesus Have a Beard or side burns (Isaiah 50:6)? He looked like any other Jew of His day – most of which did not have beards! Just as Hair on a man’s cheeks can be a sideburn, and not a beard; nails placed in Jesus wrists would actually support His weight, even though they can sometimes be referred to as “hands” (John 20:20, 25)! Did nails peace Jesus’ hands, or His wrists instead? Did they rip off his beard, or pluck out his sideburns instead? If Jesus was one of only a few men who sported a beard (remember most young Jews of His day were clean shaven); then it would have been very easy to spot “a skinny guy with long hair and a beard”!

Jesus looked so much like His disciples, that it was necessary for someone who actually knew Him, to tell Him apart from His friends! Judas Iscariot had to betray Jesus with a kiss (Luke 22:47-48 / Matthew 26:46-50). Shrewd temple leaders would not have wasted 30 pieces of silver on an informant, if they could have simply sent their guards to bring the peculiar looking Jesus to them anytime they wanted Him (Luke 22:1-6)! Jesus was not a handsome, striking figure, and did not stand out from the crowds of His time (Isaiah 53:1-3).

What Do These Three Photos Have In Common?

                                        www.onug.us

The images above (from left to right): Baphomet, the medieval term for the Sabbatic Goat, used by the Church of Satan to represent Satan the Devil / Horatio Greenough's statue of George Washington, as the God Zeus, arrived from Italy on 31 July 1841, and now sits in the National Museum of American History in Washington (American History – really?) / The Roman Catholic Church’s effeminate depiction of Jesus Christ, complete with halo, “sun” rays of light, and long hair and beard. Notice the same hand positions of all three. Is this what your Jesus looks like?

Let Us Now Allow The Scholars To Weigh In:

"He has a long-haired Jesus... Jesus didn't have long hair," said physical anthropologist Joe Zias - about Mel Gibson’s film, “The Passion of the Christ”, in a February 24, 2004 article. Zias who has studied hundreds of skeletons found in archaeological digs in Jerusalem, also said, "Jewish men back in antiquity did not have long hair!"

Other experts agree. Lawrence H. Schiffman, Professor in Hebrew and Judaic Studies at New York University, a specialist in the Dead Sea Scrolls, Judaism in Late Antiquity, the history of Jewish law, and Talmudic literature says, “The Jewish texts ridiculed long hair as something Roman or Greek.”

These experts also point to a frieze on Rome’s Arch of Titus, erected after Jerusalem was captured in A.D. 70 to celebrate the victory; which shows Jewish men with short hair taken into captivity.”                                                      www.onug.us

The Real Jesus wasn’t a tender, effeminate, skinny man with long hair! He was a carpenter, a builder, a man who knew the construction trade (Matthew 13:54-55 / Mark 6:2-3). Jesus knew how to cut down trees and how to make large wooden beams. He had to haul those heavy beams and even big rocks, to build walls and buildings out of timber and stone. Long hair would have gotten in His way. Long hair is not manageable; it would have interfered with the duties and responsibilities of being a man!

Jesus Christ had short hair; He was a man’s man! Our Savior set an example for us to follow in every area of His life – without exception (John 13:15)! God’s Word sets the standard for us in proper hair length, for men, and for women (2 Timothy 3:16-17)! If Christ had long hair, it would have contradicted (or broken) His Word - “The WORD” (John 1:1); and that cannot happen (John 10:34-35)! Remember, “Everything God establishes, Satan turns upside down”, or does the opposite of! Why would we “think” our modern concept of Jesus would be any different, or that it would be immune from Satan’s tampering?                                                   www.onug.us

A Study of the Culture and Customs of that Era:

History shows us that men have been wearing short hair for a very long time; much longer than most realize! Today, some men with long hair, especially in Christian circles, try to justify their feminine appearance by saying something like, “Jesus had long hair”, or “Jesus was from Nazareth, and was under a Nazarite vow, that is why He had long hair.” They say they are “imitating Jesus”. None of these statements are true!

Although Scripture does say Christ would grow up in Nazareth, fulfilling a prophecy that He would be called a Nazarene (Matthew 2:23 / Mark 1:9 / Luke 1:26 / John 1:45), this does not mean He took a Nazarite vow. Those under such a vow could not drink wine or touch a dead body (Numbers 6:2-3, 6); both of which Christ did (Matthew 11:19 / Matthew 9:25). Those under such a vow, grew their hair long as a sign of humiliation (Numbers 6:5).  Men who wear their hair long in our modern society, are quite proud of their hair. It is a sign of pride, not humiliation! Also, when the time of the vow was over, the person was to shave his head – ending the shameful period of time (Numbers 6:18 / 1 Corinthians 11:14).

The Roman influence in Jesus’ time is also a strong indicator of men having short hair.

Pick up any illustrated history magazine or book, and you will see pictures of busts and statues of famous Greeks and Romans of Christ’s time. In every case, the men are portrayed with short hair, similar to what we find men wearing today! The reality is that before, during, and after the time of Christ, every Roman emperor from Julius Caesar to Trajan had short hair; and it was the emperor who set the standard (the pattern in style and mode of dress) for the entire empire.                          www.onug.us

Even the Hellenistic Greek culture that dominated the Eastern Mediterranean area, and influenced Judea before the Romans came on the scene, favored men wearing their hair short. The Greek Gentiles that still remained in Judea during the time of Christ were almost indistinguishable from the Jews (John 12:20 / Acts 6:1). Archeologists today, still have an extremely difficult, and sometimes impossible task, of identifying statues of men from the Hellenistic period – as being Greek or a Jew. Why? Because throughout the Near-Eastern region (Judea in Jesus’ day), the styles were the same – including short hair on men!

Some may still argue that those who did not subscribe to a Hellenistic view, such as the Rabbis or Jewish High Priests, may have worn their hair long. They contend that Jesus taught in the temple on the Sabbath day, and was called Rabbi (or “ravi”) meaning “My Master” (John 1:37-38 / Matthew 10:24-25). While it is true that Jesus did not object to His disciples calling Him Ravi or Rabbi, and the Bible does affirm Him as our High Priest (Hebrews 4:14), this does not mean Jesus kept His hair long.

In the anti-Hellenistic Jewish Talmud is the instruction that every thirty days, all the priests should cut their hair. Why would they have this instruction if they grew their hair long? These priests were all aware of Ezekiel 44:20. God intended that the priests set the example for the rest of the community to follow (Malachi 2:6-7), and Jesus set the example for the priests to follow! Even further examination of the Talmud reveals that the hairstyle of the Jewish priests in Jesus’ day, was “Julian” (Sanhedrin 22b), or what would be referred to today as a “Caesar Cut”.

If it was important to God, for us to know exactly what Jesus - the Son of Man, looked like; it would have been recorded and preserved for us today! We can see, however, that how most of the world portrays Jesus as physically looking, is wrong; despite clear and compelling evidence to the contrary! What else about the Real Jesus Christ did we get wrong too? Stay with us next week, and you shall see!

Ultimately, if we think about Christ’s appearance at all, we ought to think in general terms; about how He looks today. Inspired by God, the apostle John described Jesus Christ’s present day appearance for us (Revelation 1:13-19):            www.onug.us

“And in the midst of the seven candlesticks one like unto the Son of man, clothed with a garment down to the foot, and girt about the paps with a golden girdle.

His head and his hairs were white like wool, as white as snow; and his eyes were as a flame of fire;

And his feet like unto fine brass, as if they burned in a furnace; and his voice as the sound of many waters.”

“And he had in his right hand seven stars: and out of his mouth went a sharp twoedged sword: and his countenance was as the sun shineth in his strength.

And when I saw him, I fell at his feet as dead. And he laid his right hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the first and the last:

I am he that liveth, and was dead; and, behold, I am alive for evermore, Amen; and have the keys of hell and of death.

Write the things which thou hast seen, and the things which are, and the things which shall be hereafter” (Revelation 1:13-19).

Praise God!!! The Bible actually tells us how Jesus Christ looks right now, and how He will look at His Second and Last Coming to this very earth (1 Thessalonians 4:13-18 / 1 Corinthians 15:20-23 / Matthew 24:3-5, 27, 29-31 / Zechariah 14:5)!!!

We also know that when Jesus returns to this earth for us – we are going to look just like Him (Philippians 3:20-21 / 1 John 3:1-3 / Hebrews 2:9-10)!!!

Let me now ask you a very humble question in closing:

If most of us were so wrong about how we thought our Savior really did look in the flesh; is it possible that we could also be so very wrong about how Jesus Christ told us to worship His Father, and our Father God - until His return (1 John 3:4 / John 4:23-24 / Matthew 5:48 / Hebrews 10:7, 9-18 / Luke 16:29-31 / Exodus 31:12-18 / Revelation 22:10-14)?  We hope you will join us next week for Part Two of this Awesome Study!        www.onug.us

The sad state of affairs today is that the vast majority of Americans are Bible illiterates (Hosea 4:6). They simply have never read the book which they profess to regard as the “Word of God”. If we are to change this, we must begin using the Bible as our primary source of education, to learn about God and His teachings (Matthew 6:33).

If you have never faithfully kept God’s seventh day Sabbath holy or God’s Holy Days, the way Jesus Christ did – in the flesh, and in the fellowship of other followers of the Son of Man (Hebrews 10:25); we invite you to obediently enter into God’s rest today, and to keep the Feasts of the LORD (Hebrews 4:1-11 / Leviticus 23:1-44)! Contact us to find out where we fellowship and worship God, in your area, on His Sabbath Days (Exodus 31:12-18). We would love to hear from you and help get you started!

Join us on-line each Sabbath and Holy Day at www.onug.us where you can download our Bible Studies, or join us on facebook to listen in to our live webinar each week.

”But ye believe not, because ye are not of my sheep, as I said unto you. My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me: And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand. My Father, which gave them me, is greater than all; and no man is able to pluck them out of my Father's hand. I and my Father are one” (John 10:26-30).

Christians must learn to read the Bible, interpret the scriptures according to Biblical principles (Isaiah 28:9-10, 13), and begin to apply the precepts they learn in their walk with God. Individual study is essential; coupled with fellowship times of group study, worship, and discussions of personal insights and observations.

We strive, each Saturday, to foster an open and welcoming atmosphere where Spirit led confirmation, clarification, questions, and correction can be made in the fellowship of other students of God’s Word.

One Nation Under God (www.onug.us) is working to unify the body of Christ in the worship of God the Father, in the way Jesus showed us to - in Spirit and in Truth! We strive to promote rediscovery of American History, and renew in current generations the Vision and the Covenant of our Founding Fathers.
